One of the greatest captains in the history of international cricket, MS Dhoni won all the trophies played during his time and remains to only captain to achieve this feat. Under him, a young Team India won the 2007 T20 World Cup while in 2011, India won the 50-over World Cup at their home.
Two years later, a mix of experienced and inexperienced Team India defeated India in the final to win the Champions Trophy. Dhoni has every accolade to take over any job in Indian cricket and the BCCI would welcome him with open arms to become coach, mentor or chief selector.
But MS Dhoni isn't eligible to become Team India's chief selector. Yes, the BCCI will not be able to offer him the coveted job due to its own rules. Under the BCCI's rules, a player has to fulfill certain criteria to join the selection panel.
While Dhoni has all the experience to become chief selector, the fact that he continues to play IPL goes against him. As per the rules, a player has to retire at least five years before applying for the job of chief selector. Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 while he continues to play.
So Even if Dhoni decides to hang up his boots tomorrow, he won't be able to become Team India's chief selector till July 2028. He can join Team India's backroom staff as a mentor, like he did during the 2021 T20 World Cup, on a part-time basis but won't have any say in the selection.
Ajit Agarkar, Dhoni's former teammate, looks set to become the next chief selector of Team India. The former India all-rounder applied for the job recently and is reportedly set to replace Chetan Sharma. The Indian Express recently reported that the BCCI will revise the chief selector's salary, which means that Agarkar will get handsome pay after getting appointed.
Presently, the chief has a salary of Rs 1 crore while other selectors earn Rs 90 lakh per annum. Team India has been without a chief selector since February 2023.
